Junkyard Dog

Before I get started today, just wanted to say thanks to my friends for getting the word out about my blog. You know who you are. Sincerely, thank you. Gnat Likes Bikes has already been viewed in 9 different countries and here in the US it's been viewed in 24 different states! Wow. Not bad considering it's officially only been going 1 week. Thanks to the readers too. I hope you stay with me.

August 26th

Well, I hope this is not a sign. I hate Alaska so far. Anchorage is a horrid place to ride ride a bike. Traffic is awful. I cannot count the times that my heart rate rose just because of stressful situations caused by motorists. I predict the morale of this trip will be inversely proportional to the # of days we spend in or around a city. Thankfully, a nice old fellow took us through Anchorage on bike paths and side roads. Without him we would be seriously depressed or dead.

Other good news is that we will be able to ride into Denali on the park rode & the wild life is abundant. We talked to a German couple that rode in. They saw caribou, moose and bear. (side note: The Germans were riding with some sort of waterproof panniers that roll up.)

Junkyard Dog - Escaped

We ran across a big dog that had a look of a fugitive. He ran up the trail, stopped right in front of me as if he was going to take a big chunk out of my leg. He had about 12 ft of chain dragging behind him. I'm not talking little dog chain here. I'm talking big heavy links like we used to use as safety chains back on the farm when we were pulling big heavy trailers. Luckily for us, he just looked at us & decided not to commit a crime.

Due to the post office stop and our poor navigation of Anchorage, only rode 41 miles. Camping just north of Anchorage. Hopefully tomorrow we will be strong enough to get all the way through Wasilla and out of the city.

As I noted a few days ago, I am so fascinated by how the brain works. For the life of me, I can't remember the Junkyard Dog incident? Why? What does this mean? Probably nothing, but you'd think I'd remember that.

You don't even get out of town and you have a chain dragging dog stare you down. That must have been a little nerve wracking.

Of course, it could have been a bear dragging a chain, I suppose!

the fact that you don't remember that amazes me. you'd think that's the type of memory that would stick around for a while, and is a testament to the art of journaling in its very existence.

good story gb. talk to you soon. send your family my regards.

cheers,
mg

Yeah, you'd think I'd remember that. Maybe it's just that one of my memories about a dog while on this trip is so strong that I forgot this one.

GT, yeah we were a little freaked out about our trip. Utah just felt so far away considering we weren't even out of town yet and were stressed to the max!

Thankfully, we are more capable than we know.
